Welcome to Sounds of Europe, a platform for field recording. The blog of the website will travel to a different European country every month where a local organisation or artist will be responsible for maintaining it. Each country´s particular context and practices with regards to field recording will be explored and presented in a personal way.

The Hellenic Society of Acoustic Ecology is officially affiliated with the World Forum of Acoustic Ecology.  HSAE is a place where scientists from different research fields, sound artists and other individuals meet in order to contribute to the research, assessment and protection of the sonic environment and the living species inhabiting it. HSAE was founded in 2006 in the island of Corfu, in Greece and was based on the Lab for Electroacoustic Music Research and Applications of the Department of Music Studies of the Ionian University.  HSAE emerged out of the ‘Hellenic Soundscape Research Group’, which in turn comprised of scientists and artists from the Department of Ecology, School of Biology of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, from the Department of Environmental Studies of the University of Aegean; from the Department of Music Technology and Acoustics of the T.E.I. of Crete,  from the Sound Group of the Department of Electrical Engineers of University of Patras, from the Electroacoustic Music Research and Applications Laboratory of the Department of Music Studies of the Ionian University and from others independent individuals.

The main research areas of HSAE are: Soundscape Research and Composition, the education of individuals and groups on the aural awareness of the environment and the preservation of the sonic environment.  Its main aims are: to establish the research field of Acoustic Ecology in Greece, to preserve the sonic environment, to assess the main activities that degrade the sonic environment, to train societies to develop their ability to carefully perceive and deeply understand the sonic environment, to foster interdisciplinary research and atransdisciplinary approach for the assessment of the sonic environment, to disseminate information on Acoustic Ecology, to encourage the communication of its members / collaborators with the local, regional, national and international institutions, and to enhance the communication between individuals and research teams interested in the field of Acoustic Ecology.

Hitherto, HSAE has successfully organized the 1st National Conference of Acoustic Ecology  (‘The Present State of Acoustic Ecology in Greece’, Ionian University, Corfu, 2007), the 2nd National Conference of Acoustic Ecology (‘The poetics of Soundscape’, Rethymno, Crete, 2010), and the Currently the WFAE’s International Conference (Ionian University, Corfu, 2011).
